8:56 Cricket – Using Cricket to Support Men’s Mental Health in Norfolk
Cricket was a huge part of Lee’s life. Whether he was playing or watching, it gave him joy, connection, and time with friends. Trips to Test matches, One Day games, and T20 Finals Days were some of his happiest memories.
In May 2023, Grimston Cricket Club invited the 8:56 Foundation to take part in a special fundraising match to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. The day was a great success and inspired players and supporters to make cricket a lasting part of the 8:56 Foundation.
That’s how the 8:56 Social Cricket Group began.
A Welcoming, Supportive Cricket Community
Our values are simple:
Everyone is welcome
All abilities included
We reduce isolation and loneliness
Play with friendship, support, and wellbeing at the heart of every match
We’re not just here to play cricket, we’re here to support men’s mental health and wellbeing across Norfolk.
Raising Awareness Through Cricket
Our mission goes beyond the boundary rope. We work with local cricket clubs to start open, honest conversations about men’s mental health, suicide awareness, and the importance of reaching out early. By talking openly and compassionately, we hope more men feel confident asking for help when they need it.
Our Impact So Far
Over the past three years:
100+ players have worn the 8:56 colours
Nearly 50 matches have been played
Over £10,000 raised to support men’s mental health in Norfolk
Annual fixtures with local clubs have become highlights of the season
What’s Next?
We’re expanding our support for the cricketing community. In 2026, clubs will be able to access:
Awareness Packs, including posters and wellbeing booklets
Free mental health awareness webinars, held quarterly (90 minutes each)
More opportunities to learn, talk, and support one another
